Reading Pathways Robert Penn Warren I first read Robert Penn Warren as a sophomore in high school. All The Kings Men  was required reading and it is not an overstatement to say that this book changed my life.  In the nearly two decades (yikes) since my sophomore year, Ive read almost everything Warren ever wrote. Now, well into my 30s, I see that the questions that preoccupied Warren became my own obsessions: history, southern identity, civil rights, and politics. Whether thats because I read Warren at a relatively young age or the reason that I love his books, I couldnt begin to  tell you. Born in Kentucky in 1905, the young  Robert Penn Warren did not aspire to a  career in literature. After an accident that hurt his eyesight, Warren gave up on his dream of becoming a Naval officer in favor of studying English  at Vanderbilt University. It proved to be a good decision. During the course of his six decade  career, Warren won just about every major literary award out there. He is  the only person to win Pulitzer Prizes for  both  fiction (once) and poetry (twice). He served as Americas first poet laureate and the NEH selected him for  the Jefferson Lecture  in 1974. Seven years later, President Carter awarded him the National Medal of Freedom. Warren  produced an enormous amount of writing across many genres (ten  novels, sixteen poetry collections, plays, text books, and several works of non-fiction for adults and children).  The five books below will give you a good introduction to Warrens fiction, essays, and poetry at various points in his career. If youre new to Warren, youll want to start with  The Cave.  This novel, published in 1959, marks the mid-point of Warrens fiction career. This book takes place in the present and follows the entwined stories of two young men who plan to turn a local cave into a tourist destination. When war hero Jasper Harrick becomes trapped in the cave, his supposed partner, Isaac Sumpter, uses Jaspers accident to stir up a media frenzy. The crisis brings out family secrets, long hidden desires, and religious fervor. Despite being nearly sixty  years old, this book felt very contemporary when I read it. Warren is curious about news as entertainment, wars invisible wounds, betrayal, culpability, sex, and family. Next, read All The Kings Men: Easily his most well-known work, this is the book that got me hooked on Warren. He won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1947 for this fictionalized take on the populist Louisiana governor Huey Long. This novel is so much more than just a political novel.  Warren tackles big questions in this book about the nature of power, corruption, love, family, memory, history, and southern life. Ive read this book at least five times and find something new in it each time I return to it. Over the years, Ive probably bought fifteen copies of this book to give as gifts. Its the book I use to say, Here. This is who I am. If you can understand this book, you can understand me. In fact, I made my then-boyfriend, now-husband read this book and talk to me about it before I decided if we could get serious (he liked it, we got married. Its fine). When you switch over to non-fiction, start with  The Legacy of the Civil War.  For my money, this long essay is still the most accurate and moving explanation of the Civil Wars role in American life. Like other historians, this book absolutely shaped my understanding of the Civil Wars meaning. Written for Life magazine during the 100th anniversary of the Civil War, Warren argues that the Civil War is Americas felt history (for better or worse). He also explains that the memory Civil War constrains  both the north and the south. This is  a beautiful, meditative, and intellectually honest account of the Civil Wars lasting power to shape American life and politics.  Warrens interest in history was deeply connected to his commitment to contemporary political causes. In 1964, Warren traveled around the United States to interview Civil Rights activists for his book Who Speaks for the Negro?  In addition to the otherwise forgotten  volunteers in the movement, Warren spoke with James Baldwin, Stokely Carmichael, Malcom X, and students at Tougaloo College. The book includes selections from these interviews and Warrens reflection on their conversations. It is not an oral history or a work of history in a technical sense. Instead, Warrens book  was an attempt to find out what [he] could find out about the Civil Rights Movement while it happened. The Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities has made the original recordings of these interviews available online via the Who Speaks for the Negro Archive. Finally, read some of his poetry. He did win the Pulitzer for it twice! Warren won his second poetry Pulitzer for  Now and Then: Poems, 1976-1978. The latest work Ive included on this list, these poems will give you a sense of an older Warren. If you just want to sample Warrens poetry, you can read several of his poems online courtesy of The Poetry Foundation. I feel I should include a quick note about one book not to read: Warrens biography of John Brown. Its his first book and, although it showcases the themes that hell come back to in his poetry and fiction, its just not that good. There are other, better, and infinitely more readable biographies of Brown out there (like Tony Horwitzs Midnight Rising). If these catch your eye, I cant wait for you to find his epic poem about the murder of a slave by Thomas Jeffersons nephew. Its great but not his most approachable work.

Response I learned that spreading the gospel to others can also help you grow closer to God and even an apostle of Jesus had to pray for the ability to share accurate information. Although Much Ado About Nothing is typical of many of Shakespeares romantic comedies there are dark elements, which run throughout the play. As soon as the play begins in the first scene, the reader is introduced to Don Pedro and Don John: two brothers. Don Pedro is an important nobleman from Aragon; he is socially superior to everyone else and is often referred to as Prince. Don John on the other hand is the illegitimate brother; he is often referred to as the Bastard. In Elizabethan times illegitimate children were perceived as evil, they were socially inferior as a result of the circumstances in which they were conceived. They were often seen as a representation and reminder of the sin through which they were created. Shakespeare immediately establishes a strong connection between the negative connotations and attitudes that were present in Elizabethan society at the time regarding illegitimate children and Don Johns character. He does this by ensuring that the reader notes the dark shadow that Don Johns presence casts during the otherwise happy and jovial first scene where everyone gathers to welcome Don Pedro and his men back from the war. At first during Act I Scene I there is no mention of Don John in the conversation, and there is no direct speech addressed to him. Only once Leonato has finished greeting Don Pedro and Beatrice and Benedick have exchanged wry remarks does he eventually turn to greet Don John. This implies that although Don John and Don Pedro are brothers and should be treated as equals, Don John is treated as an inferior simply because he is illegitimate. As a contrast to the jovial exchange between Leonato and Don Pedro, the exchange between Leonato and Don John is short and succinct. Don Johns reply to Leonatos greeting, Act I Scene I Lines 140-41 I thank you. I am not of many words, but I thank you. implies that he is a brooding man, that he has deep-rooted issues and troubles and is very melancholy. His resentment is manifested through his actions and behaviour. Right from the beginning of the play from when we are introduced to Don John he is presented in a negative light. During Act I Scene III Don John is in the company of one of his followers and companions, Conrade. During this scene Shakespeare reveals Don Johns unpleasant nature. Conrade asks Don John why he is so miserable and dejected. Don John replies There is no measure in the occasion that breeds, therefore the sadness is without limit. Don John is telling Conrade that there is no limit to his misery. Don Johns reply indicates that he is self-indulgent, his anger and frustration at his situation has led him to become embittered. He is so self-absorbed that he refuses to let anyone talk him out of his anger. When Conrade presses him for an answer Don John replies telling him that even if there was a reason it would make no difference. Already Shakespeare is presenting Don John to the audience as an unreasonable and melancholy man who will not change for anyone. Gladwell has four New York Times bestseller books he has written. Among one of those books is Outliers: The story of success (2008). Outlier, a nonfiction book, had to do with social psychology. Outlier is about the success of people who do not fit into our normal understanding of achievement. Gladwell points out that many people could be giving the same opportunity but it all comes down to early opportunity and privileged social standing are what really makes an Outlier.Gladwell does a really good job on breaking down the story of success of some Outliers. He goes in detail in how some Canadian hockey players make it have it easier than others, how Bill Gates is who he is today and the genius Christopher Largan failure to become an Outlier. In Outliers, Gladwell wants to convince the reader that people don't just r ise from nothing to be successful. Success comes from parentage and patronage. It also comes down to when and where you grew up. First example Gladwell gives is explaining how some Canadian hockey players become better than others.Gladwell research shows there’s an uneven number of elite Canadian hockey players. Players that are born in the first few months, January, February and March, of the calendar are more likely to be successful than those born in the last month of the year. Statistics showed players born in January, February, and March are most likely to be in the hockey traveling team. The reason for this was because in Canada, the eligibility cut-off for age class hockey is January 1. Someone born in January 2 has bigger physical maturity than someone born in November.Those with bigger maturity get chosen to join the elite team. But what change his path into not only being successful in life but also making him a billionaire was Bill Gates was given a unique opportunity that no one was given to at that time. He had the privilege to be the only one to be able to use the High School computers as much as he wanted after school, even overnight. It is there where he practiced programming and achieved the 10,000 hour rule.The 10,000 hour rule is the require amount o f time a person must practice in order to succeed. Personally, I agreed with this 10,000 milestone as I know someone who put ton amount of hours in his profession. At the age of ten, a teammate of the soccer team I used to play in used to stayed an extra two hours playing soccer after soccer practice was over. Practice was three hours along. That was a total of five hours a day of playing soccer. This was his routine for at least five times a week for the next nine years. He passed the 10,000 hour rule by age eighteen.At age twenty, he got signed to professional soccer team New York Red Bulls. Gladwell also uses Christopher Largan as an example. Largan is considered by many the smartest man in America. He has an IQ of one-ninety five. With a higher IQ than Einstein, everyone automatically thinks he is going to be successful in life. Largan does not become an Outlier. One reason for that is Largan did not have anyone in his life. His mother was not there to support him. There was no opportunity for him to demonstrate his talent. Gladwell compares Lohan to Oppenheimer, the creator of the atomic bomb.Oppenheimer came from a wealthy neighborhood. His father was a business man. Oppenheimer had better opportunities to develop his intelligence than the opportunities Largan had. Largan came from a poor neighborhood and his mother was always working. Another difference between the two was Oppenheimer had practical intelligence and Largan didn’t. Practical Intelligence is â€Å"knowing what to say to whom, knowing when to say it, and knowing when to say it, and knowing how to say it for maximum effect (101). † Oppenheimer tried to poison one of his tutors.He was going to get kicked out of the University but he managed to get away with it because Oppenheimer had practical intelligence. Oppenheimer got these skills when he was child from his wealthy parents. He got away with attempting murder and just got sent to a psychiatrist in London. In the other hand L argan had to drop out of school because his mother didn't sign his financial scholarship on time, therefore he lost the scholarship. When he tried to talk to the dean, Largan wasn't able to convince the dean to let him keep his scholarship.Largan lack of practical intelligence he never got by his parents. It leaves me wondering what if Largan came from a wealthy neighborhood and his father was a business man. Would he have being bigger than Albert Einstein? What if Oppenheimer was raised in a poor neighborhood? He would’ve most likely end up in jail for trying to murder his tutor. Practical intelligence is something some persons have and should appreciate it. My brother always talks his way out of a ticket most of time when he gets pull over by police.On the other hand, I always get the ticket whenever I get pulled over by the police officer. I get very nervous and don’t know what to say while my brother always comes up with a unique excuse and they let him off the hoo k. Outliers has made me realize in order to be successful, one has to have luck on their side. I could be the smartest man in the world, but if I don’t have the proper background to succeed I won’t be able be successful. People who have being successful have had a unique opportunity in their life.Some of them were born at a time that was for their advantage. It makes me think if my birth year has any luck store for me in the future. I will recommend this book to people because it has some material in it that caught my attention. The 10,000 hour rule is what really got my attention. Seeing how The Beatles became successful after passing the 10,000 hours motivates me to put in hard work to what my goal is. What also caught my attention is how we have different perspective about school than what Asian think.Americans think if we go to school for a long time, we going to fatigue the brain and therefore not learn. That is the reason why we get a lot of vacation time. The As ian community makes their students go to school most of the year for at least eight hours. It is why they are mostly highly knowledgeable than most Americans. If people read what the Asians do in order to be highly intelligent, it could perhaps make them want to spend more time in school. Yugoslavia to Officially Become Serbia and Montenegro

On Tuesday, February 4, 2003, the parliament of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia voted to disband itself, officially dissolving the country that was created in 1918 as The Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Seventy-four years ago, in 1929, the Kingdom changed its name to Yugoslavia, a name which will now live in history. A New Country The new country taking its place is called Serbia and Montenegro. The name Serbia and Montenegro is not new - it was used by countries such as the United States during the time of Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevics rule, refusing to recognize Yugoslavia as an independent country. With the ouster of Milosevic, Serbia and Montenegro became recognized internationally as an  independent country  and rejoined the United Nations on November 1, 2000, with the official long-form name the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The new country will have dual capitals - Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, will serve as the primary capital while Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro will administer that republic. Some federal institutions will be headquartered in Podgorica. The two republics will create a new joint administration, including a parliament with 126 members and a president. Kosovo remains part of the union and within the territory of Serbia. Kosovo remains administered by NATO and the United Nations. Serbia and Montenegro could break apart as independent countries through referendum as early as 2006, through a European Union-brokered accorded approved by the Yugoslav parliament before its dissolution on Tuesday. Citizens tend to be unhappy with the move and call the new country Solania after EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana. Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Macedonia all declared independence in 1991 or 1992 and broke away from the 1929 federation. The name Yugoslavia means land of the southern Slavs. After the move, the Croatian newspaper  Novi List  referred to the tumultuous situation, Since 1918, this is the seventh name change of a state which has continuously existed since Yugoslavia was first proclaimed. Serbia has a population of 10 million (2 million of which live in Kosovo) and Montenegro has a population of 650,000.
